Journées d'Analyse Mathématique et Applications JAMA2022 En l'honneur du Professeur Mohamed Sifi
In 2007 we created the International SUPERTMATIK Mental Maths Competition, a contest based in the SUPERTMATIK card game. The central principle of this championship is for students to develop basic competence in mathematics from the beginning of their schooling through constructive play, interesting and involving them in it via a fun way of learning. The widespread adoption of this innovative educational game by schools, combining mental challenge and play, has been instrumental in overcoming traditional obstacles many students have in mathematics.
The main objectives of the championship are to:
- promote interest in mental maths;
- develop skills in number and mental maths;
- reinforce the learning of mathematics through play;
- discover and publicise talent in mental calculation.

Mathematicians Transcend Geometric Theory of Motion :
In a nearly 400-page paper posted in March, the mathematicians Mohammed Abouzaid and Andrew Blumberg of Columbia University have constructed a major extension of one of the biggest advances in geometry in recent decades.
The work they built on relates to a well-known conjecture from the 1960s made by Vladimir Arnold.
Arnold was studying classical mechanics and wanted to know when the orbits of planets are stable, returning to their original configuration after a set period. Read more
The second Azat Miftakhov Days will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday July 5-6, 2022 :
In solidarity with Azat Miftakhov, a mathematics graduate student from the Moscow State University who has been arbitrarily detained by Russian state authorities since February 2019. Azat has been mistreated and tortured by the authorities while in detention. His trial, which took place after much
delay in the Fall of 2020, was based largely on the testimony of “secret” government witnesses. In a grossly unjust and excessive decision, in January 2021 a court in Moscow sentenced Azat to six years imprisonment in a penal colony for “hooliganism”. Azat is currently serving this sentence in a labor colony in Omutninsk.
Tuesday July 5, 2022 from 4pm to 7pm Central European Summer Time (UTC+2) – online On the first day, we will honor the new generation of Russian mathematicians committed to human rights. The speakers are Ilya Dumanski (MIT), Alexander Petrov (Harvard) and Slava Rychkov (IHES).
Their mathematical lectures will be broadcast live on Zoom and youtube.
Wednesday July 6, 2022 from 5pm to 7pm Central European Summer Time (UTC+2) – hybrid On the second day, we will co-organize with Memorial Human Rights Center a panel to assess the human rights situation in Russia through the cases of persecuted academics.
The panel will be hybrid, online and in person at the École normale supérieure in Paris, open to academics, human rights organizations and journalists. On 29 December 2021, the Moscow City Court has ordered the closure of the prominent Russian NGO Memorial Human Rights Center for allegedly violating “foreign agent” legislation. Founded in 1991, HRC Memorial is one of the most respected human rights organizations in Russia and in the world. The prosecutors claimed that HRC Memorial repeatedly violated the “foreign agents” law by refusing to label their content as produced by a “foreign agent”. They also claimed that HRC Memorial justified “terrorism and extremism” by keeping a list of people detained for political reasons on its website. The list featured individuals imprisoned following unfair, politically-motivated trials, including Azat Miftakhov.
On 28 December 2021, the Supreme Court ordered the liquidation of its sister organization, International Memorial. The first Azat Miftakhov Day organized last year, attracted over 1600 participants and raised awareness in the mathematical community of the injustice suffered by our young colleague. We are counting on your participation in this second edition to send a strong message of solidarity to Azat and to press for his immediate and unconditional release. Registration is mandatory both for participation online or in person. The registration form is available here.
Further information will be available on caseazatmiftakhov.org

Title: Solving man-field PDEs with symmetric neural networks
Abstract:
We propose numerical methods for solving non-linear partial differential equations (PDEs) in the Wasserstein space of probability measures, which arise notably in the optimal control of mean-field dynamics, and are motivated by models of large population of interacting agents. The method relies first on the approximation of the PDE in infinite dimension by a backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) with a forward system of N interacting particles. We provide the rate of convergence of this finite-dimensional probabilistic approximation for the solution to the PDE and its L-derivative. Next, by exploiting the
symmetry of the particles system, we design a machine learning algorithm based on certain types of neural networks, named PointNet and DeepSet, for computing simultaneously the pair solution to the BSDE by backward induction through sequential minimization of loss functions. We illustrate the efficiency of the PointNet/DeepSet networks compared to classical feedforward ones, and provide some numerical results of our algorithm for the examples of a mean-field systemic risk and a mean-variance problem.

Azat Miftakhov is named an honorary student of Paris-Saclay University: The Hadamard Doctoral School of Mathematics at Paris-Saclay University issued the following statement on March 4, 2021 naming Azat Miftakhov an honorary student and welcoming him to complete his doctorate under good conditions once he is released.
The Hadamard Doctoral School of Mathematics (École doctorale mathématique Hadamard –EDMH) protests against the imprisonment of Azat Miftakhov since February 2019, and his recent sentence to 6 years in prison.
Azat Miftakhov, a doctoral student in mathematics at Moscow State University, was arrested in February 2019 and held in detention on questionable charges. He was sentenced on January 18, 2021 to 6 years in a penal colony. Memorial Human Rights Centre considers that Azat Miftakhov is condemned because of his political opinions. The EDMH joins international committee of mathematicians formed in his favor and with several national mathematical societies (AMS, SMF, Unione matematica italiana, Sociedade Brasileira de Matemática), to demand his immediate release, and the dropping of the charges against him. In this context, the direction of the EDMH names Azat Miftakhov an honorary student of the doctoral school. Once he is released, it is ready to welcome him so that he can complete his doctorate under good conditions.

Luke Hodgkin, 1938-2020: Son of Nobel laureate and radical historian who forged his own path as a mathematician and activist remembered:
Luke Hodgkin was born in Norfolk in 1938, the son of Dorothy Hodgkin – only the third woman to receive a Nobel Prize in Chemistry – and the pioneering Marxist historian of Africa Thomas Hodgkin. Both were committed socialists and internationalists, and he was taken, for example, at the age of 17 to the Congress of Black Writers and Artists in Paris, where the speakers included major figures in the movement for decolonisation such as Frantz Fanon and Aimé Césaire. After securing a scholarship to Eton College, which he hated, Dr Hodgkin studied mathematics at Balliol College, Oxford and went on to a doctorate in algebraic topology at St John’s College, Oxford (1964). He taught at the University of Algiers (1964-65) shortly after the country gained independence from France, and then at the new University of Warwick (1965-70). In 1970, Dr Hodgkin joined the department of mathematics at King’s College London for the best part of five decades, initially as senior lecturer and from 1971 as reader, until he eventually retired in 2017. His main research interests were in topology and applications of geometry to physics. Yet he was anything but a narrow specialist. His website ranged widely across science, art, poetry, music and even “mathematical rap songs”. He produced a celebrated overview titled A History of Mathematics: From Mesopotamia to Modernity (2005) and lectured to a broad public at Gresham College on “Money and Mathematics” (2011). He also had plans for a book called Mathematics, Money, Drugs and War designed to “demonstrate how mathematics, with its claim to exact results, has become a central instrument of control” used, for example, not only to design drones for military purposes but to “prove that their workings are effective – and in particular to deny the existence of civilian casualties”. Although this book was never completed, Dr Hodgkin found many other outlets for his political convictions, notably a commitment to refugee and Palestinian rights. He studied for a part-time master’s in human rights at Birkbeck, University of London (2009-11), volunteered at both the An-Najah National University in Nablus and legal advice centres in London, and made several visits to the “jungle” camp in Calais to offer support. He also worked with the non-governmental organisation Phone Credit for Refugees to help people stuck in camps in Greece and Lebanon. Dr Hodgkin died of cancer on 6 October and is survived by his wife, Jean Radford, and their two children, three children from an earlier marriage, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A new ad-hoc IMU Committee on Diversity:
Recently, there has been a considerable increase of attention devoted worldwide to the issues of diversity and inclusion. Many institutions and organizations have recognized the need to re-assess their relationship to the issues of diversity and inclusion.
In the past few years, there has been increased attention to diversity in the IMU.
This has been combined with an increased consideration of conflicts of interest and implicit biases. These changes have certainly improved the operations of the IMU. To build on this, the Executive Committee (EC) of the IMU has decided to create an ad hoc committee called the Committee on Diversity (CoD) that can offer us advice regarding diversity and inclusion.
The purpose of CoD is threefold:
1. Assess how the IMU has performed to date
2. Offer advice on how we can improve our performance
3. Offer advice on how our members (the Adhering Organizations) can improve their performance nationally.
CoD's final report will first be discussed by the EC. The EC will then make its recommendations to be discussed at the General Assembly in St Petersburg prior to the ICM 2022.
The work of the committee will be public, and the committee will be free to seek advice and engage in discussions wherever it finds suitable.
The chair of CoD is Robert Bryant (Duke University, US), and his email address for this is <chair@cod.mathunion.org>. Other members are Edy Tri Baskoro (Indonesia)
Sophie Dabo-Niang (France/Senegal)
Edray Goins (US)

OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Awards for early career women scientists from the developing world:
OWSD is pleased to invite applications for the 2021 OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Awards. These awards reward and encourage women working and living eligible developing countries who are in the early stages of their scientific careers, having often overcome great challenges to achieve research excellence. Awardees must have made a demonstrable impact on the research environment and must have received their PhD in the last ten years.
The award has an important impact on local research cultures. Previous winners say the awards have had a powerful effect, enhancing the visibility of their past work and creating new opportunities for the future. The awardees are also powerful role models for girls and young women on their countries. You can read more about our past awardees here.
In the past years, each winner received a cash prize of USD 5,000 and an all-expensespaid trip to attend the annual meeting of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in the U.S.A., where the Awards Ceremony took place. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 annual meeting of the AAAS will be held entirely online. We are currently evaluating other international scientific events and the trip will be confirmed in the coming months according to how the COVID-19 pandemic evolves.
A total of five Awards will be given to women who are within ten years of receiving their PhD and have lived at least 5 of the last 15 years in one of the 66 science and technology lagging countries. There will be one prize awarded for each of the four regions of the developing world plus an additional “floating” award for a particularly deserving candidate from any of these regions. Winners will be informed of their selection by 31 December 2020.
The Awards for Physical Sciences are offered in the fields of Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Any combination of these fields (i.e. interdisciplinary) is acceptable. You can see a list of eligible disciplines here.
Assessment will be based on the applicant’s achievements in her scientific field, with additional attention paid to evidence of leadership skills, initiative and innovation, as well as to the candidate’s involvement in capacity building, outreach and civic contribution. For full information on selection criteria and to apply, see the attached Call for Applications or visit 2021 OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Awards.

At the 2018 General Assembly of the IMU in
São Paulo it was decided on the recommendation of the Executive
Committee to establish the ICM Structure Committee (SC). Up to ICM
2018, the responsibility to determine the scientific program (sections and
the number of talks in each section), appoint panel members who
recommend the speakers,
as well as decide all speakers for the forthcoming ICM, has resided with the
omnipotent Program Committee (PC). It is a fact that the sections have
varied very little over time. The aim now is to keep pace with and reflect
the development of all fields of mathematics in order to the make the ICM
a showcase of modern mathematics.
The ICM Structure Committee will be responsible for the scientific program
of the next ICM in St Petersburg, while leaving the selection of the
speakers with the PC. Former IMU President László Lovász is the Chair of
the SC.
Membership of the ICM Structure Committee is as follows:
László Lovász [chair]

EditFlow earns frequent kudos and is now in use at more than 65 journals. As an organization built by and for mathematicians, we want EditFlow to spread even further, especially now that Elsevier has purchased Editorial Manager (the EditFlow-like software used by Springer, Taylor & Francis, etc.). If you know of any journals with a possible interest in switching to EditFlow, please send them our way.
On the publications side, we're excited to have three new journals in addition to TJM. With library budgets under increasing pressure, it was a big decision for us to adopt and start new journals, but the way we see it, every page published by MSP is a page not published by one of the big commercial publishers. All four of our new journals are available free online in 2018 and by subscription starting in 2019:
If you'd like to contribute to MSP's mission to defend, expand and strengthen independent scientific publishing, one of the best things you can do is to make sure your institution's library subscribes to one or more of our journals.
At HLF all winners of the Fields Medal, the Abel Prize, the ACM A.M. Turing Award, the Nevanlinna Prize, and the ACM Prize in Computing are invited to attend. In addition, young and talented computer scientists and mathematicians are invited to apply for participation. The previous HLFs have been an exceptional
success. The HLF serves as a great platform for interaction between the masters in the fields of mathematics and computer science and young talents.
for the online application and further information. The IMU Adhering Organizations and national mathematical societies can nominate young researchers.
Nominated persons get “priority treatment”, but, since there may be too many nominations, they have no acceptance guarantee. During the nomination process you will be asked for an Org-ID, which is IMU38526 for the IMU. The deadline for application is February 9, 2018.
IMU asks its Adhering Organizations to distribute this information among their national mathematical communities, if possible through the newsletters of the national mathematical societies.
The HLF was initiated by the late German entrepreneur Klaus Tschira, and is supported by the Klaus Tschira Foundation, The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, The Association for Computing Machinery, as well as The International Mathematical Union.
